GUIDELINES FOR THE BELT RANK ADVANCEMENT PROGRAMS
The position of the International Association of Martial Arts & Oriental Medicine policy states that rank be based on reasonable criteria with no unreasonable age barriers or time restraints.
The Belt Rank Advancement Program is based on the “Educational Contract” concept currently in use in many colleges and universities around the world. In the contract, the student prepares a statement demonstrating why he or she should be given the requested promotion.
The Association has provisions for both Black Belt and Junior ranking systems. The Association may award rank if the present rank is too low to represent the person’s experience, skill, time in grade in addition to other criteria.
A member may advance in rank through a program of self-development agreed upon by the member and the Association.
BLACK BELT & JUNIOR RANK ADVANCEMENT

THE REQUIREMENTS ARE:
1. Write an essay covering the following points:
A. Since your last promotion, in what ways has your KNOWLEDGE increased
which justifies this requested promotion?
B. Since your last promotion, in what ways has your SKILL in the martial arts
progressed which justifies this requested promotion?
C. Since your last promotion, in what ways has your ATTITUDE in the martial
arts developed which justifies this requested promotion?
2. Outline your involvement in teaching, or as an assistant instructor in the martial arts.
3. Outline your involvement in tournaments as a competitor, score-keeper, time-
keeper, director, referee, or judge.
4. You may submit a video, VHS format or DVD, of your performance of all your kata,
weapons, etc., most basic to most advanced. Be sure to include the name of each
kata. The last kata will be your most advanced kata or a kata that you have
created. If requesting Black Belt rank advancement, a created kata should
demonstrate advanced Black Belt complexity.
(Submitting a video is optional, but may be helpful.)
5. Complete the Belt Rank Application.
In specialized cases, where a martial artist has demonstrated a high level of expertise through years of study or contribution to the Arts, the Board will approve more than one belt rank advancement at the same time. Fees will be due for the belt rank requested. Please see the Schedule of Fees.
All materials submitted will be retained by the Association. Submitted materials and appropriate fees will be considered a request for promotion, and should specify the advanced rank(s) you are requesting. Notification of the status of your request will be mailed to you within thirty (30) days of receipt of your request. Arrangements for issuing your rank will begin immediately after advancement confirmation.
